and if you don't frequently use phrases like "degradation of a sacred institution," go check out the wedding photo here. hell, go see it even if you are hard-core conservative. it's sweet and cute and harmless, and the facial expressions are priceless.
if i understand the article correctly (if not, please excuse -- it was a work-skim!), civil unions have been legal for a bit... but san fran has jumped the gun and made gay marriage legal. they're expecting all kinds of legal protest, and it may not be upheld when the state gets through with it... not to mention the nation... but man do they ever sound happy in the meantime!
ok, after reading the nytimes article where they don't expect you to know all the background... in 2000, CA voters said that marriage is between a man and a woman. this year, they passed a civil union law. but sf's mayor decided to take the state constitution's anti-discrimination clause seriously, and they timed things to get some folks all marrified before some "family values" organization could file an injunction.
the article said they'd been together 50 years. damn. i mean, if you're cool enough that anyone can stand you for fifty years in a row without even some form of contract to add social, religious, and economic pressures to stay together, you deserve something beyond just a wedding certificate. a medal or something. or a winning lottery ticket. well, i suppose the fight against such social pressures prob'ly provides a little determination in itself... but wow.
I agree, anyone who can live with another person deserves an award...especially if they did it without the support of many people...They deserve an award...of course I said the same thing when I found out my uncle had put up with my aunt for 55 years!
Whoa.
