I'll commend Mel on sticking to his guns and making it the most visceral, gory portrayal of suffering I've ever seen on screen. But there's not much depth to the movie beyond that.
I didn't think it was particularly well written or directed. If you can fill in all the voids the movie leaves in background and development, it could be a little more meaningful. On its own, the movie just shocks you with blood and gore and doesn't do much else.
Then again, it would be good to see the movie to see what it is everyone's talking about. I wish I went with the other half of the group to see Monster, instead, though.
