just fixed up the encryption... turns out we were using different keys in different parts of the apartment, and crossing out a couple digits and replacing them fixed it.

but now... will it let me post to livejournal without complaint? for some reason, nearly everything for which you need a login's been malfunctioning all morning. ('cept my e-mail, which is how i got the last post in.) prob'ly just as well if it was going unencrytped... but yeah. if you see this, the non-encryption was indeed the problem.

**quick update: yay! it worked! and on that note... i should go job-shop. i'm tempted to add "fantastic ability to waste ungodly amounts of time tackling and solving silly computer problems with no prior knowledge of the issues involved" to my resume. s'pose it's why i like linux so much...**

Heeheehee, that's actually why I stopped using linux. Although now I feel like a tool of The Man using The Man's software so maybe I should boot back into linux one of these days. :)

Tinkering's fun if you have time for it.

Glad you're back on!

Alex

thank you, thank you! i miss linux, but i'm not worrying about it until i can afford a laptop and convert this old pile into the official linux box and tinker and what have you... win xp, while part of the man, keeps me fairly happy yet still able to communicate with the ouside world, so until i get enough harddrive to dual boot...

i just wasted another hour and a half on the @#$*%&! router... do you know what MTU means? taking it down from near-1500 to around 1100 seems to have brought back all the websites we still couldn't get to yesterday (turns out i wasn't the only one experiencing this problem -- the others couldn't get to their mail and stuff last night), but i have no clue why. or what other nasty side effects it might have. oh well.

MTU is maximum transmission unit. I think it has to do with PPP on Ethernet networks. My guess is that there was a discrepancy between the MTU on the computers and the router, and the router was just dropping packets. But that's just me taking a wild stab in the dark. :)

ooh, real information! thank you! seems like the problem was coming when we had to send information to the internet, so my guess is that the dsl service just couldn't handle taking on the whole big packets the router was up to sending at once... or something like that.
