i'm still trying to find happy homes for the last couple invitations that showed up this morning, and it would seem that most of the people who had previously mentioned being g-mail-less already have accounts...

(oh, and while i'm posting... my bizarre muscle ache o' the day: palms of my hands. must be from mowing yesterday. i didn't even notice until i tried to make a fist at karate this morning. this can't be normal, can it? but maybe it'll eventually result in super grip strength and the ability to open pickle jars.)

enough nonsense... off to get groceries and figure out how to plant roses and tomatoes (advice more than welcome!) and clean up the garage and find a new job. i feel so old.

Ok, I asked the old woman (please remember my mom never finishes a thought before going to the next). Here was her advice:
Follow the directions on the plant for depth.
Put a bit of water and fertilizer in the bottom of the hole and let it set for a sec before you drop 'em in. (Want the roots moist).
Put the potting soil from the plant around it first, then fill in with topsoil. Tamp it down firmly.
On the rose put the dirt as high as the stemmy part (this is where I got confused, and asked for clarification. I got the "are you stupid look." But she explained as close to the first branch.)

Does that help some?

thanks so much! i'm very much still at the "gardening for dummies" stage (um, i have that particular book out of the library, actually), so clarifications like the one on the rose are extra-good. i'll certainly give it a try as soon as time outside work and not-raining time coincide.
