*sigh* i love lance armstrong. i can't help it. i guess this comes from watching all those Tours when I was a kid with my babysitters. I am still probalby the only person I know who can tell you why it was so miraculous for Greg LaMonde to win the Tour de France once...let alone how many times he wound up winning.
wow, someone else had a childhood warped by tours?!? my mother always set up vcrs to tape the middle-of-the-night coverage back before OLN... i don't think i really started paying much attention until i developed some fascination with france - so somewhere in the reign of endurain. (or however it's spelled... i never know how to spell the cyclists...)
so other than being from a country that could care less about cycling, why was lemond's win so miraculous?
but man. this year, voeckler, the french kid who had the yellow jersey for ten days up 'til today... he was such an underdog, and so cute - he looks like he's about 15 instead of 24 - that you couldn't help rooting for him to keep the jersey as long as he could. plus he's on a team called boulangere le brioche, which makes me hungry for yummy french bakery food every time i hear it. ah well, at least he gets the white jersey now.
the first year (or maybe the second--i was young i cna't remember) Greg won, he had been in a hunting accident the year before... His brother in law, I believe, had thought he was a deer or something and shot him like 5 times. and he came back form that adversity and won. (although, being an american to win...yeah, that was special too).
and yup, my babysitters--jennifer and beth-- LOVED cycling. we'd take long bike rides every day during the summer and pretend we were on the tour.
