Apr. 11th, 2005 09:55 pmdriving without glasses is weird. i get a kick out of squelching the urge to fumble for them whenever i walk out to the car, though.
it took me half an hour at the optometrist's this morning to get the things in. this is with coaching. i don't want to think about how early i need to get up tomorrow morning to ensure i get to work on time. i was a little shocked at how fast it all moved, though... when they were ready to let me go, i announced that i was interested in trying contacts. two minutes later, they have the trial pair in the room. i'm used to glasses speed, where you go away for a couple days before you get anything.
i'm a little scared to go to bed, scared that once i take them out they won't go back in. and i like them in -- i can't tell until i randomly look up at something i'm not used to being able to see. like cars on the road outside work. and then i get surprised and tickled all over again.

Date: 2005-04-12 02:40 am (UTC)Anyway, after I lost one, then gave up, I went from the age of around 13 to, 18 before I tried them again... as I was insured that they had disposable ones now. Well, they do, but i'm wierd...
See, i have an astigmatism, which you may as well, but luckily my actual eyesite isn't that bad... which means that I have a wierd Rx, and they never have the trials in for me. C'est la vie.
But, when I do get the regular ones, they used to say leave 'em in for 2 months at a time... but i'd stretch it out just slightly longer... or until I lost one or I could feel it was time... But then they up and changed the box to say 1 month, but didn't change the contact. So, I figure, i'll continue with my schedule... :-)
(still, 2 boxes, 1 for each eye, costs around $80, whereas normal contacts for most people are like $20 for 6 months... )
I never really had a problem with them. And I used to hate things going near my eyes... you just get used to them.
the only thing is to make sure you put them in right... (they probably told you to look at it sideways, it should look like a regular bowl, not some wierd shaped art piece bowl... which would mean it was backwards... so go for the perfectly round shape, that's what you want)
They say if you put them in wrong, it won't hurt your eye, just feels wrong... to me, if feels like i've got something in there... but sometimes you end up with a piece of lint or something that you didn't see that's on them... don't ask, things happen.
Oh, and if you drop it, it's not like food, you don't do the 10 second thing... Well, I don't do that with food. But you do want to wash it off... not throw it away.... Just rinse it in regular saline.
My advice on the cleaning solution is just to use the "No Rub" stuff alone, if you have disposables... as it gets off most of the protien build up, and i've never needed the other little bottle stuff.
Also, there's this stuff called Aeosept, which I LOVED... but the only thing is that it's basically hydrogen peroxide, and then you have this little built in disc in the case that makes the hydrogen peroxide do that chemical thing (can't think of the word) and turn into h2o and salt... hence, saline. :-) But before it does that, the hydrogen peroxide cleans them REALLy good... ONLY PROBLEM is that you HAVE to leave them in the case for a minimum of 6 hours... unless you want Hydrogen Peroxide in your eye... but soetimes it's inevidible, as you touch the case and it has residue on it... plus, you have to use a seperate saline... So, just stick with the No Rub by Renu or Bauch and Laumb... good stuff.
So, there you have it.
Just be patient with them, they'll work out. Good thing for you is that you can go back to glasses should you not be able to get them in.
I'd give it 2 tries per eye each day, and if you can't get them in, just wear the glasses and try again the next day, because if you keep trying, your likely to scratch your eye, and/or have a really sore and red eye all day... which sucks!
That's about all for now. Good luck!
Oh, and call Kristy if you have more questions. She used to be like you, squeemish with her eyes, and wears contacts sometimes!!!
