anybody seen gothika? any good? call me a snob, but based on previews i really wasn't interested. until i heard that mathieu kassovitz directed. (hurrah, borders had a copy of the french edition of premiere magazine! and they always have at least one article on kassovitz...) you know, the guy who played amélie's love interest? which alone wouldn't motivate me to obsessively seek his movies, but he also starred in amen and directed la haine, interesting movies both, which indicates at least a certain degree of taste overlapping mine...

despite the sudden spark of interest, i got matrix revolutions for tonight... no great expectations, but dave and i agreed we might as well finish out the series.

RUN AWAY!! Run far away...

I think if I had the option now to go back and erase both that one and Matrix Regurgitated, I would. I still like the first one, but I don't think I'll ever really have a desire to see the 2nd or 3rd movies ever again.

Matt thought it was "adequate," and I barely sat through it without getting up and walking out because it was so bad. Luckily, I didn't actually pay to see it, but I'll never get that 2.5 hours back. :(

Most people I've talked to who liked Revolutions basically suggest that I shut off my brain and pretend I'm watching Dragonball Z. It is suggested that if I do so I may enjoy it very much, but if I try to engage my brain during viewing I may die. Then again, some people see a lot of philosophy in it, but that's largely because when you rip off so many things in science fiction and anime, you're gonna get some good stuff in there.

You shouldn't waste your time on Gothika. It's better than most horror-type movies, but seeing as I hate nearly every horror movie that isn't saying much. You can tell Kassovitz is trying hard to hold onto some sort of vision for the film, but it appears to be a compromise between something original and something commericial and the end result is something muddled from an artistic perspective. It's neither demiurgical or mindless. It's just somewhere in between. There's also a number of logical leaps in the plot. I'll leave those for you to discover if you watch the movie. Overall it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, so it's probably not anything you should regret not having ever watched.

By the way, I thought "Revolutions" was awful. Full of little subplots that didn't add anything to the film. And the final fight between Neo and Smith was horrendous. The problem was not enough special effects. Or too many special effects. I'm not sure but it didn't look natural. Something was wrong about it.

It's just a shame that a potentially good story was ruined by being stretched into two too many movies.

thanks for the mini-review... i may grab gothika if house of sand and fog's still out of stock whenever i take the matrix thing back tomorrow, or maybe not... i rarely like horror movies.

and yeah, while low expectations led to little disappointment with matrix revolutions, i certainly wasn't impressed. i realized pretty early on that i didn't remember whatever parts of the second movie were relevant, so i was mildly lost on the plot... and since we're all accustomed to standard matrix-action-style now, there weren't even any grabbing new visuals, which was the one thing that kept me hanging on through the second movie. (i never felt like digging into the architect's speeches because i had a feeling they were empty underneath, but the fight against many smiths and the ghost things were at least fun to look at.) oh well, at least they're not trying to stretch it any further. yet.
